• How did the scholars of tasawwuf devise the methods of dhikr?

How did the sufiah (mashaikh of tasawwuf) devise the spiritual remedies and methods of dhikr to help acquire Ihsan? i.e was it Ilham etc

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

    As-salāmu `alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The spiritual remedies and methods of Zikr of the Sufiyyah Kiraam (Rahmatullahi Alayhim) have been established in the light of the Qur’an and Hadeeth. (Fatawa Mahmoodiyyah, Vol.6, Pg.223, Mahmoodiyyah)

One of the main responsibilities and duties of Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) was Tazkiyah and Islaahe Nafs. (Al- Qur’an, 2: 129)

Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) has taught us the following Du’aa:

” اللهم اني اسئلك حبك و حب من يحبك و حب عمل يقربنا الي حبك”

“Oh Allah, I ask you for your love, the love of those who love you and the love of every action that draws us close to your love”

The spiritual remedies and practises of the Masha’ikh and Ahlullah fall under the purview of the last part of the Du’aa since their remedies and practises help one reach the ultimate goal of Tasawwuf and Tareeqat.

The Sufiyyah Kiraam (Rahmatullahi Alayhim) and the Ahlullah serve as mediums to the Ma’rifat (gnosis) of Allah (Ta’ala).

The main condition is that the spiritual remedies and practices of the Sufiyyah Kiraam (Rahmatullahi Alayhim) must conform to the general principles and  cardinal maxims of the Shariah.

    And Allah knows best.

    As-salāmu `alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

    Dear Brother in Islam,

We commend your sincerity in reforming your Nafs and gaining the Mahabbah (divine love) of Allah (Ta’ala).

    1. Performing the Fardh Salaah with Jamaat(congregation) is of critical importance especially for a person who wishes to gain the love of Allah (Ta’ala). To wake up early in the morning for the Fajr Salaah is one of the most difficult things on the nafs of an individual. You may employ the following measures to ensure that you do perform the Fajr Fardh Salaah with Jamaat:

    a. Obtain an alarm clock and set the time accordingly. Place the alarm clock at a distance from your bed so that you are forced to wake up and switch the alarm of. This will ensure that you don’t simply turn the alarm of when it rings and continue sleeping.

    b. Impose a monetary penalty on yourself for every Salaah that you miss. For example: five or ten Ringgit (note: this is the currency of Malaysia where the inquiry is from) for every Salaah that is missed.

    c. Request someone else to who performs Fajr Fardh Salaah with Jamaat to phone you on your mobile at Fajr time.

    d. The most important thing is a sincere intention to correct the situation and to adopt firm and resolute courage.

    2. Make up for the missed portion later. Also, impose an extra five pages of Qur’an recital for every day that you missed.

    3. Same as Number three.

With regards to watching pornography, we advise you to immediately undertake the following measures:

    1. Impose a monetary penalty on yourself for every Haram picture that you see on the internet.

    2. Restrict your internet usage to the bare minimum and only out of need and necessity.

    3. If you need to use the internet, request some elderly person who you respect, your parents, your wife or any other person to invigilate you when you are using the internet.

    4. Just imagine the punishment of making Zina of the eyes on the day of Qiyamah(Doomsday) whenever the slightest thought of looking at filth on the internet crosses the mind.

    5. Make sincere Tawba to Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) and ask Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) to protect you from such a sin.

    6. Just imagine the disgrace and shame that will overcome you if your wife, parents or teacher comes to know of the filthy act that you have done. Where would you hide your face if the entire public comes to know of the sin that you are involved in?

    7. Before you sleep every night, think about death and how you will be buried in the grave with no-one to assist you and help you. Imagine Ghusl (pre-burial bathing)being done to you, you will then be enshrouded with the Kafn, people will be crying, the Janaza Salaah will be performed and then your body will be carried to the graveyard and then you will be buried in the depths of the ground. Who will be there to assist you on that day? Every day, take out some time before you go to sleep and think about death. Insha’Allah, this will remove the ghaflat (heedlessness) from your Nafs.

    8.  Restrict the internet content that you can view by restricting pornographic websites on your internet service.

    9. Keep yourself occupied at all times. Keep a Tasbeeh(rosary) in your pocket and whenever you have time and you are not really doing anything, take out your Tasbeeh (rosary) and make Dhikr. Remember that “An idle mind is a devils workshop”.

Remain firm and resolute in your quest. Never give up hope. Always, keep trying. Never give way to the subtle whisperings of Shaytaan. At first, refraining from sins might be extremely difficult, but after constant struggle and punishing of the Nafs, the Nafs will finally become tamed and then you will feel pleasure in refraining from sins. Insha’Allah, one day Allah (Ta’ala) will open up his treasures of Ma’rifat and Mahabbah to you. Aameen.

    Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) says:

و الذين جاهدوا فينا لنهدينهم سبلنا

“And those who strive to attain our pleasure; we shall definitely guide them to our paths” (Al- Qur’an, 29: 69)

In the above verse, Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) promises those who make an effort to gain the love of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala). The promise of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) will definitely come to pass, there can be doubt about that. All that is required is that we continue striving in this path and we will surely attain the Ma’rifat of Allah (Ta’ala).

    And Allah knows best.

  • What do I do if I have different thoughts when making Zikr?

I want to ask, with remembering Allah swt, very often I forget to say words of Zikr but my heart starts wondering inside about the greatness of Allah swt, insignificance of this world, death and so on. Because I am not saying any Zikr directly, is what I am doing still considered part of Zikr and do I get reward for it? I try to stop the thoughts and start saying actual words but sometimes I find it hard, I kind of like the silence and just thinking.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

    As-salāmu `alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Zikr is to focus ones heart and mind to Allah Ta’alā and His greatness. Verbal Zikr aids in achieving that. If your heart is engaged in the thought of Allah Ta’alā, that is very good. You should also stipulate a certain amount of verbal zikr everyday. For example, one hundred times لااله الا الله, one hundred times الله الله every morning.

  • Zikr prescription

I want some Zikr Ma’moolat. I am doing three tasbeeh which is done in Jamaat.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

    As-salāmu `alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The reality of tasawwuf is Tazkiyya (purification) of one’s naf’s.

We are created from sand, water, fire and air. Each one of these elements reflects a certain character in a person.

Anger is the reflection of fire in a person. Humbleness is the reflection of the sand in person. Water reflex’s itself through a person’s intelligence. Arrogance is the outcome of the air in person.

In tazkiyya, the focus is to bring a balance in all natural instincts.  The purpose is not to eliminate the natural instincts.

Anger and pride are natural. Arrogance and humbleness are also natural instincts. In tazkiyya, the focus is on controlling the natural instincts and avoiding every instinct form exceeding moderation.

Excessive anger is bad. To be humble is praiseworthy. However at times it is inappropriate. All other evils of the nafs flow from these evils.

Tazkiyya of the nafs is one of the missions of Rasulullah (s.a.w).

    Allah says,

“It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom – although they were before in clear error.”

When a person does not concentrate in rectifying his soul, he feels uneasy within himself.  His family life is in chaos.  He has marital problems.  His children are disobedient to him. His social life is a burden for him. To a large extent, if one honestly examines himself, he will conclude that he is the problem.

He did not contain his nafs.  His problems are the consequences of his nafs.  Had he controlled his nafs, the position would be different.

Everyone knows when he is following his nafs.  Allah has given everyone an ultra sense to determine that. If one examines his challenges in life honestly, he will conclude that he brought his problems upon himself.

    Allah says:

Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].

If one is able to purify his nafs himself well and good. If one cannot do so, he should seek the assistance from a spiritual doctor.

If one is physically sick, he consults a doctor.  Similarly; a spiritually ill person should also consult a spiritual doctor to cure his spiritual sickness.  If one denies this, his condition will worsen.

A spiritual guide who has undergone spiritual training under a sheikh kamil will apply his skills and expertise in curing one form his spiritual diseases.

A spiritual guide adheres to shariah and the Sunnah and all aspects of shariah. When one sits in his company or hear his talks or listens to his zikr, he feels spiritual enlightenment in his heart.  The above is a brief explanation on the philosophy of tasawwuf.

We advise you to adhere to the following in the meantime:

    1. Perform the five Fardh (obligatory) Salaahs with Jamaat (congregation).

    2. Read some portion of the Qur’an daily.

    3. Be sensitive to the rights of others at all times.

    4. Read the following Tasbeehaat daily:

4.1) Durood Shareef (100 times daily)

    4.2) Istighfaar (100times daily)

4.3) Third Kalimah (100 times daily)

When reciting the above Tasbeehaat, try as much as possible to focus the mind on the greatness and grandeur of Allah (Ta’ala) and if you can’t do that or find that difficult, then focus the mind on the waves of the ocean, a particular mountain, e.t.c so as to focus your mind on the Qudrat (power) of Allah (Ta’ala).

    5. Abstain from sin as far as possible. If you do commit a sin, immediately make Tawba (repentance) to Allah (Ta’ala) for committing such a sin. Remember that one of the most significant ways of refraining from sin is by determination and resolute courage.

We advise you to submit a report of your spiritual condition/state after every ten days so that we may advise you accordingly.

For more details, you could download the talks on tazkiya and also listen to the zikr programmes on:

  • The Zikr Of Allah

‘The Zikr of Allah is something that will not cost you any time. We all have very busy lifestyles and many a times we complain that we do not have enough time. With Zikr, you do not have to make any time for it. It is something that you could super impose over your regular schedule; be it while at work, whilst cooking, whilst shopping, and even whilst relaxing. Zikr of Allah is something that is extremely easy and extremely rewardable. We may think that just because an act is simple and easy it does not carry weight in it. That is not the case.

Ibnul Jawzi (Rahmatullah alayh) delivers advice in his book Sayd al khatir. This advice is a rule for burglars. Anyone who is in the field of burglary has to learn this rule. This is the most important law and rule for burglary; you cannot graduate from it until you master this rule. What is this rule? You take whatever is very light in weight and very valuable in price. When you walk into a house to steal, you do not carry the couches and chairs, rather you will take with you the gold and jewelry.

In the same way; we need to apply this rule when dealing with the laws of Shari’ah. There are some Ibadaat which are very easy to do and carry a lot of weight. One of them is the Zikr of Allah Azza Wajal’.
